Oshare Kei
Colourful, upbeat pop-punk with a kawaii aesthetic — the antithesis of dark VK.
What Is Oshare Kei?
Oshare kei (おしゃれ系, “fashionable style”) was the bright, cheerful counterpoint to everything dark and heavy in Visual Kei. Emerging in the early 2000s, it took the visual spectacle of VK and replaced gothic drama with pop-punk energy, candy colours, and relentlessly upbeat songwriting. Bands wore rainbow-dyed hair, animal prints, and layered street fashion rather than Victorian mourning dress. The fanbase skewed younger; the concerts were celebratory rather than cathartic. At its peak, acts like An Cafe and Lolita23q were pulling enormous crowds on their positivity and accessibility alone.
The Sound
Pop-punk and pop-rock foundations with VK’s signature production polish. Songs are short, hook-driven, and built around singalong choruses. Tempos are fast and energetic; guitar tones are cleaner than in heavier subgenres. Synthesisers appear frequently, adding a shimmer to the mix. Vocalists use a higher, cleaner register. Lyrics tend to be about friendship, love, and self-expression rather than darkness or despair. Some acts borrowed from scene and post-hardcore; others leaned into pure J-pop structures.
The Look
An explosion of colour. Hair in every shade — pink, blue, green, often multiple at once. Clothes drawn from Harajuku street fashion: layered items, cartoon prints, platform shoes, excessive accessories. Some acts crossed into decora territory; others kept it to a stylised, candy-coloured version of rock fashion. The unifying principle was that everything should look fun, approachable, and expressive of individuality. Dark colours and heavy makeup were replaced with glitter, colour contacts, and elaborate but cheerful costuming.
