What Is Kirakira Kei?

Kirakira kei (きらきら系, “sparkly/glittery style”) is the 2010s evolution of oshare kei’s positive energy taken to its furthest extreme. Where oshare kei was colourful and upbeat, kirakira kei is blindingly so — rhinestones, holographic fabrics, fairy-kei influences, and an idol-adjacent performance style that prioritises audience participation and collective euphoria. The line between kirakira kei bands and idol groups is sometimes paper-thin; the distinction tends to be that kirakira kei acts write and play their own music rather than performing assigned material, and the VK live-circuit infrastructure remains the cultural home.

The Sound

High-energy pop-rock with heavy electronic and EDM influences. Four-to-the-floor beats appear alongside live drumming; synthesised bass complements or replaces electric bass. Vocals are sweet, high, and processed with light effects. Songs are short, dense with hooks, and designed for call-and-response participation at lives. Influences from idol pop, Eurobeat, and anime theme songs are legible throughout. The production aesthetic is deliberately maximalist — every frequency filled, every moment melodic. Lo-fi is the enemy; sparkle is the goal.

The Look

Maximum glitter. Rhinestone-encrusted costumes in pink, silver, white, and rainbow. Hair in platinum or pastel tones, often decorated with ribbons, stars, or clip-in extensions. Makeup is heavy on highlight — gloss lips, blinding highlight on cheekbones, holographic eyeshadow. Fairy kei, decora, and princess-fashion references are all present. Everything must reflect light. Stage lighting rigs are designed to maximise the effect — kirakira kei stages tend to look like standing inside a disco ball.
