LUNA SEA Tribute Band LUNA CHEE Goes Massive in McDonald's CM

LUNA SEA’s official tribute band LUNA CHEE is back and bigger than ever. The group returns for a new McDonald’s commercial campaign launching November 3, 2026, but this time they’ve evolved from a novelty act into a full-scale 100-piece ensemble that captures something genuinely spectacular about Visual Kei’s theatrical DNA.

For those unfamiliar: LUNA SEA stands as one of Visual Kei’s most influential acts, their 1990s output defining the genre’s gothic elegance and musical sophistication. LUNA CHEE initially emerged as a playful homage, with child actor Kato Seishiro channeling frontman RYUICHI’s iconic aesthetic for McDonald’s “Cheese Cheese” menu promotion last year. The concept was simple but effective—fast food branded through Visual Kei reverence.

LUNA CHEE ensemble cast

This year’s iteration explodes that concept into something genuinely wild. The new CM (“Everyone’s Luna Chee”) features Kato reprising his role as RYUICHI—complete with the signature hair and styling—fronting 19 different Visual Kei and rock bands comprising 100 total musicians. The lineup reads like a who’s-who of the scene: LUNA RIVER’s HARUTO, Alice Nine’s HIROTO, KIZU’s Yue, Tenjourou Opera’s Hibiki, NIGHTMARE’s YOMI, and lynch’s Reio all participated. They’re all dressed in LUNA SEA tribute aesthetics, performing a cheeky reworked version of “ROSIER” retitled for the promotion.

The shoot itself became legendary territory. LUNA SEA’s bassist J made a surprise appearance to encourage the 100-strong cast, telling them “You are all LUNA SEA now!” Kato, visibly emotional, exchanged a firm handshake with the band member. Mimic performer Tamutamu—who handled vocal duties last year—returned to choreograph the ensemble, coaching everyone through RYUICHI’s signature hand movements and expressions.

The accompanying “Cheese Cheese” menu promotion runs through late November, featuring items like the “Cheese Cheese Double Cheese Burger” and “Cheese Cheese Teriyaki Chicken Juicy Mac”—the branding pun working overtime. McDonald
