XAA-XAA – Keshou Review: A Bold New Chapter

XAA-XAA have never been a band to tread familiar ground, and Keshou—their latest single—proves they’re not about to start. The title itself, meaning “makeup” or “adornment” in Japanese, signals a project concerned with transformation and surface-level subversion, a thematic thread that bleeds through every second of this release.

For a band that has spent years pushing the boundaries of Visual Kei’s sonic palette, Keshou represents a fascinating inflection point. Rather than retreating into comfort or chasing radio-friendliness, XAA-XAA lean harder into the experimental DNA that’s defined their most compelling work. The production is crisp and intentional—every synth stab and percussion hit lands with surgical precision, yet the composition itself refuses easy categorization.

What strikes most immediately is the group’s willingness to strip away unnecessary ornament without sacrificing their signature atmospheric density. There’s a minimalist cruelty at work here, an aesthetic restraint that makes each element feel essential. Vocally, the performance matches this mood—intimate without being vulnerable, controlled but never sterile.

The single functions as a statement piece: XAA-XAA are still thinking in big ideas, still interrogating what Visual Kei can be in 2026. It’s not their most immediately accessible work, nor should it be. Instead, Keshou reads as a mission statement for a band comfortable alienating casual listeners in pursuit of artistic integrity.

If there’s a criticism to level, it’s that the single occasionally verges on overly austere—moments where additional textural variation might have deepened the emotional impact. But that’s almost beside the point. XAA-XAA have crafted something undeniably theirs, a release that demands active listening rather than passive consumption.

For longtime followers, Keshou is essential. For newcomers willing to meet the band on their own terms, it’s an excellent entry point into a band that refuses compromise.

Rating: 8/10
