X JAPAN Revives Classic MVs; Rare CLAMP Anime Collaboration Returns
X JAPAN is treating fans to a treasure trove of visual content this summer, resurrecting both a beloved ballad from their golden era and a genuinely legendary anime collaboration that’s been nearly impossible to access for decades.
The legendary Visual Kei pioneers have been systematically uploading previously unreleased music videos to YouTube, and the fourth installment in this archival series features “Say Anything,” a standout track from their 1991 album Jealousy. Released on July 1st, 1991, this emotional ballad closes out the album and ranks among X JAPAN’s finest slow-burn compositions. The accompanying video captures behind-the-scenes moments and live footage from the Violence In Jealousy Tour 1991, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the band’s touring life during a pivotal period in their career.

But the real headline here is the limited-time return of “X,” an animated music video born from a groundbreaking 1993 collaboration between X JAPAN and the manga collective CLAMP. Their original manga series X launched serialization in 1992, and this cinematic experiment paired the source material’s apocalyptic visuals with the band’s soaring instrumental track. Directed by legendary animator Rintarou (known for countless masterpieces) with production support from Madhouse studio, the work is widely recognized as a pioneering example of manga-to-anime-to-music artist crossover—essentially inventing a fusion concept years before it became commonplace.
The catch? This project was never widely distributed or commercially available, transforming it into the stuff of fan legend. That changed in June when Crunchyroll acquired and remastered the work for their platform. Now, YouTube is hosting it on a strictly limited basis through July 31st at 11:59 PM JST, so if you want to witness this rare artifact of early ’90s Visual Kei and anime collaboration, don’t sleep on this window.
Head to X JAPAN’s official website, X account (formerly Twitter), and Instagram for the latest updates and direct links to both releases.
