PENICILLIN Revive

PENICILLIN Revive "Romance" as Tanzaku CD for Tanabata 2026

Legendary Visual Kei pioneers PENICILLIN are marking their 30th major debut anniversary with a move that feels both nostalgic and boldly forward-thinking: they’re resurrecting their signature hit “Romance” as an 8cm single CD—known affectionately in Japan as a “tanzaku CD”—timed for Tanabata on July 7th, 2026.

For those unfamiliar, tanzaku CDs—named after the colorful wish-papers hung during Tanabata celebrations—were a staple format in 90s Japan. PENICILLIN, who debuted with an 8cm single back in March 1996, were instrumental in shaping Visual Kei’s evolution. Now, three decades later, they’re leading a wider revival of the format alongside a national “Tanzaku CD Day” event.

The band’s choice of “Romance,” their biggest chart success, is strategic and emotionally resonant. In a statement, vocalist HAKUEI called the song perfectly suited to Tanabata’s theme of heartfelt wishes reaching heaven. Guitarist 千聖 (Senseido) acknowledged the 28-year gap since the original release, inviting fans both old and new—whether they lost their copy or missed it entirely—to experience it anew.

The “Romance” tanzaku CD (¥1,650) includes the original track, “Tomorrow,” and an instrumental version. Copies will roll out nationwide July 7th through CD retailers and online shops as part of the broader Tanzaku CD Day initiative, which features 30 participating artists across multiple genres.

PENICILLIN aren’t resting on nostalgia alone. They’re hosting a pop-up shop at Tower Records Shibuya (July 7–12) and gearing up for “Matsuri 2026” on August 1st at Veats Shibuya—a request-based live show where fans vote on setlist selections. Tickets go on general sale July 11th.

For Western fans keen to support this release, head to PENICILLIN’s official site (penicillin.jp) or follow their X account for all updates. Those in Japan can secure “Matsuri 2026” tickets via the eplus system starting July 11th.
