Mastermind Opera Achieve Unprecedented 8-Year PURE ROCK JAPAN Streak
One of Japan’s most prestigious metal live festivals is about to witness a historic milestone. PURE ROCK JAPAN LIVE, a cornerstone event in the domestic metal scene since 1999, returns on June 28 at Club Citta in Kawasaki—and this year marks a turning point in the event’s storied history.
Mastermind Opera will achieve an unprecedented eighth consecutive appearance at the festival, surpassing the previous record of seven held by GALNERYUS. It’s the kind of milestone that underscores both a band’s staying power and their integral role in shaping Japan’s metal landscape.
The four-band lineup reflects the breadth of Japan’s current metal scene. Alongside Mastermind Opera are HAGANE, TEARS OF TRAGEDY, and Zilqy—a newcomer to the event that’s already generating considerable buzz. Fronted by vocalist 苑 (En), Mastermind Opera expressed genuine gratitude for the achievement: “It’s a great honor that Mastermind Opera will have the top consecutive appearance record at PRJ this year. The energy and unity at PRJ live is always intense, and I’d love to share that with many people. Looking forward to making it the best night again this year!”
But the real talking point might be Zilqy’s debut. Since their formation last autumn, the band has commanded attention by bringing together two powerhouse musicians: Toki (guitar) from Aldious and Miho (bass), a founding member of LOVEBITES. Their pedigree is undeniable, and Toki’s enthusiasm is infectious. “Getting to perform at PURE ROCK JAPAN, which we’ve wanted to do since our formation, is incredibly honorable. We’ll soak up that amazing atmosphere and overwhelming sound with our whole bodies, and leave our mark as Zilqy with everything we’ve got!”
