LUNA SEA Honor Drummer Shnya at Emotional Farewell Service
LUNA SEA’s legendary drummer Shnya passed away in February after a brief illness, leaving an indelible mark on one of Japan’s most influential rock bands. On May 14, the Tokyo rock community gathered at Toyosu PIT to celebrate his life and legacy at an emotional farewell service attended by bandmates, industry peers, and devoted fans.
The memorial stage was arranged with three of Shnya’s drum kits—each representing a different chapter of his 41-year journey with the band. The main set used during LUNA SEA’s final Tokyo Dome performances in February took center stage, surrounded by approximately 7,000 vibrant flowers. A pristine Yamaha kit that Shnya had rehearsed on but never performed with publicly sat alongside drums used during his last recorded drum solo. The third kit belonged on stage at March’s Ariake Arena show—the comeback performance Shnya had fought tirelessly to achieve through rehabilitation and treatment.

Shnya’s widow, singer Ayai Ishiguro, spoke movingly about his unwavering commitment to the band. “Even during his illness, his greatest fear was that he’d be the reason LUNA SEA would have to stop,” she explained. “His entire life revolved around this band—it was the center of everything.” Despite his condition, Shnya remained the band’s emotional anchor, maintaining his infectious humor and strength to protect those around him. Ishiguro revealed he asked her to keep smiling: “He told me, ‘Aya, stay smiling. It’s okay.’ So that’s the promise I’ll keep.”
At home, Shnya was an indulgent father who balanced his gentle parenting with relentless musical dedication. “He watched drum videos constantly, always asking what he could do next,” Ishiguro recalled. His professional rigor never wavered, even as illness took its toll.

LUNA SEA’s remaining members—vocalist Ryuichi, guitarist/violinist Sugizo, guitarist Inoran, and bassist J—addressed the crowd with quiet determination. “We came together with Shnya as a five-piece,” J stated firmly. “Now we carry his spirit on our national tour.” The band’s upcoming “LUNA SEA TOUR 2026 UNENDING JOURNEY -FOREVER-“ begins May 29 in Hatano, Kanagawa—Shnya’s hometown where he served as cultural ambassador.
Sugizo, who’d known Shnya for 41 years since high school, painted a picture of a stubborn, fiercely independent drummer who famously refused to fly during the late ’90s, taking trains alone while the rest of the band toured. His bandmates described an artist of profound emotional depth—someone with “magical timing” (as J described it) who wielded groove like spell-work, always smoothing tensions and holding the five-piece together with invisible threads.
“His way of being is now part of our DNA,” Ryuichi concluded. “We honor him by moving forward with joy.”
